Missed Breast Cancer Screening

News reports revealed a shocking lapse in the screening system used to monitor women for breast cancer. Almost half a million women failed to receive invitations for breast screening since 2009 due to an IT error within the NHS.
Women in England who are aged between 50 and 70 are invited for a mammogram (an x-ray of the breast) every three years. Since the IT error started in 2009, around 450,000 women have failed to receive invitations for their three-yearly mammograms. Early estimates show that up to 270 women may have had their lives shortened as a result of the failure to carry out a mammogram.

Sadly, more than 100,000 of women affected by this error have since passed away. It is not known how many women may have died as a result of breast cancer, or how many women may have died as a result of this error.

The Government has, however, pledged to set up a process to investigate the failure, to learn lessons and to look at compensating those affected.

FAQs

What do I do if my breast screening has been missed?

If you have concerns that you may have been missed, contact your GP or local NHS Trust for initial advice or to find out what’s happening. If you’re already aware that you’ve been missed, and you think you might have been adversely affected as a result, contact us to speak to one of our specialist lawyers.

Should I have received a letter about breast screening?

Usually, women are invited for breast screening every three years between the ages of 50 and 71. Women who were affected by the past issues with breast screening should have received a letter from the NHS informing them that they have been affected.
